The Pumpkin House
The purpose of this blog is to offer for sale this lovely and unusual Arts and Crafts bungalow known as the “Pumpkin House”, in Branchville, Frankford Township, NJ, for $275K. It is a unique home, one of a dozen whimsical stone and slab log homes built by Charles Oakley in 1929 on a wooded mountainside overlooking Culver Lake, only sixty miles from NYC. The area is known as the Oakley Historic District.
Under the pumpkin (everyone asks…) is a utility room with hot and cold water tanks, and wellhead. The bell in the tower can be rung with a cord from inside the house (Our folks used to call us kids in from all over the lake for dinner with its ring). The two large stone fireplaces. The foundation and gables are also beautiful local fieldstone. The upper structure is sided with log slabs. Roof runner logs underlie gables and eaves. Inside, supporting woodwork consists of whole hickory logs. The roof is shingled with cedar shakes. On the main floor of the 1378 sq ft home are the kitchen, full bath, great room with fireplace and cathedral ceiling, dining room, and large bedroom (12x16) w/loft. The dining room opens to a 12 by 25 screen porch with lake view. Split-level, down from the main floor (through a corridor below the bell tower), is the master bedroom (13x15) with stone fireplace and half-bath. Down stairs, below the main level, is a third bedroom (273 sq ft) with half bath and door to outside. This room is currently fitted as a woodshop.
Outside, level with the main floor, is a spacious deck (10x20), with steps leading to the back garden area. The entire site is adorned with stone masonry: walls, steps, pillars, bar and barbeque. There is an in-ground (22x40) 40,000 gallon pool, which needs waterproofing and new filtration system.
The half-acre property is in a tranquil woodland setting 400 yards from the Appalachian Trail and in the vicinity of beautiful Sunrise Mountain.
Private lake membership provides access to the lake and its facilities (beach, summer and winter motor and non-power sports, fishing (license required for adults), clubhouse, swim teams, and other activities for the whole family) For appointment to see this unique, historic, fairytale house, call Mike at 973 948-5307 (serious inquiries only, please).
